2. STEP
7
What is STEP 7?
STEP 7 is the standard software package used for configuring and programming
SIMATIC programmable logic controllers. It is part of the SIMATIC industry software. There
are the following versions of the STEP 7 Standard package:
- STEP 7 Micro/DOS and STEP 7 Micro/Win for simpler stand-alone applications on the SIMATIC S7-200.
- STEP 7 for applications on SIMATIC S7-300/S7-400, SIMATIC M7-300/M7-400, and SIMATIC C7 with a wider range of functions:
Can be extended as an option by the software products in the SIMATIC Industry Software
(see also Extended Uses of the STEP 7 Standard Package)
- Opportunity of assigning parameters to function modules and communications processors
- Forcing and multicomputing mode
- Global data communication
- Event-driven data transfer using communication function blocks
- Configuring connections
STEP 7 is the subject of this documentation, STEP 7 Micro is described in the "STEP 7
Micro/DOS" documentation.
Protcol Testing Tools
Substation Automation and Communication Standards:
One area of significant development is with applications that can involve communications to substations such as:
- SCADA;
- Interfacing to a power line carrier AMR and/or load management system;
- Video (for physical security or equipment observation);
- Mobile data hotspots;
- Voice over IP;
- Relay, control, and meter configuration-related functions;
- Retrieval of disturbance information;
- Communication network management;
- Physical access security such as card readers;
- Communications link to down-line devices for distribution automation; and,
- Remote access from the substation to central application servers.
1. DNP 3.0
DNP3, or DNP 3.0, is a communications protocol used in SCADA and remote monitoring systems. It is widely used because it is an open standard protocol. This means that any manufacturer can develop DNP3 equipment that is compatible with other DNP3 equipment.
2. Modbus
Modbus is a communication protocol
developed by Modicon systems. In simple terms, it is a method used for
transmitting information over serial lines between electronic devices.
The device requesting the information
is called the Modbus Master and the devices supplying information are Modbus
Slaves. In a standard Modbus network, there is one Master and up to 247 Slaves,
each with a unique Slave Address from 1 to 247. The Master can also write
information to the Slaves.
3. IEC - 61850
IEC 61850 is an international standard
defining communication protocols for intelligent electronic devices at electrical
substations. It is a part of the International Electrotechnical Commission's (IEC)
Technical Committee 57 reference architecture for electric power systems.
4. IEC – 104
IEC 60870-5-104 (IEC 104) protocol is an extension of IEC 101 protocol with the changes in transport, network, link & physical layer services to suit the complete network access.
5. IEC - 101
IEC 60870-5-101 — IEC 60870-5-101 [IEC101] is a standard for power system monitoring, control & associated communications for telecontrol, teleprotection, and associated telecommunications for electric power systems.
6. IEC - 103
Standard IEC 60870-5-103 defines a multipoint communication protocol via which information can be exchanged between a control system (supervisor or RTU) and one or more protection devices. The control system is the master and the protection devices are the slaves.
7. ICCP
The Inter-Control Centre Communications
Protocol (ICCP or IEC 60870-6/TASE. 2) is being specified by utility
organizations throughout the world to provide data exchange over wide area
networks (WANs) between utility control centers, utilities, power pools,
regional control centers, and Non-Utility Generators.
