June 22, 2019, I went to the MG showroom in Navi Mumbai to test drive the Morris Garage (MG) hector. This was the first vehicle from the stables of British manufacture. There has been much talk about this car in the Indian Auto Industry. You might have even read or seen many of the reviewers talking about it. Based on the review I land at the MG showroom to test drive the SUV. I was greeted by the salesperson who gave me the specs of the car.
The unique thing about the vehicle was it's first in class to have voice assist for eg. by saying. Hello MG, please close the sunroof. This would literally close the Sunroof.
During my test drive session, Salesperson showed me this functionality which I found was intriguing also at the same time found instances where I had to speak up or speak slowly to get the sunroof to close. I guess the voice assist could not register my voice, well I know it is still in infancy stages and these things are bound to happen and I believe with software updates these issues would be rectified.
What I loved about MG Hector was the ride quality as I was planted high above the ground which gave me a better road presence. Also, Since you are planted high above the ground there might large blindspot but this was not the case because of the 360 Degree camera. When compared to Ford endeavour which is mammoth in its size. This is opposite of what the Ford provides from its form factor.
Its design elements are unique from the foglamps & headlight placement. I guess there new trend which I believe all manufacturers are slowly adopting and MG is no exception have started with their headlights been placed closer to the bumper. In my personal opinion, I am not much of fan of the headlights been lowered to the bumpers as most of the small mishaps/accidents happen around the bumper area which means that even small mishaps can cost the vehicle owner a hefty price tag for this repair.
Another cork which I felt and this is subjective and I believe the design elements of the vehicle don't go quite well. I felt that it looked that front headlights are speaking one language and the taillights are speaking another language while the body indeed was speaking the third language. Like I said this is subjective and not many would agree to me. Definitely different is unique in our current market situation. After the launch of this vehicle, this definitely got many owners wanting to own this vehicle. This vehicle and the Kia seltos only 2 SUVs in the market which was doing extremely well. These vehicles were different and seemed like they were the new cops in town. I got the opportunity to have a small test drive for both vehicles so I believe both were good competition and they could be possible Tom and Jerry of the auto industry. The tough pricing and branding of both vehicles will see who will be the clear winner. But for now, MG did a real good job with this vehicle. I also came to know that they are planing an EV model which I am excited to test drive.
